Purple teardrops I cry

11 March 2010

Okay kids. Tonight at 11:30pm EST is the official debut of Lady Gaga’s Telephone” video, featuring Beyoncé. It’s evidently a nine minute sequel to her super fabulous “Paparazzi” video, which weighed in at seven minutes. Who’s excited about this? Duh, we are. To get prepared, here’s the video for “Paparazzi.”

It’s kind of like watching the most recent Harry Potter movie to get ready for the new one when it comes out. READY, SET, NERD.

Shut up and put your $$ where your mouth is

I was lucky, lucky, lucky enough to see The Magnetic Fields on Friday night in Bloomington, at the Buskirk Chumley theater. The Magnetic Fields are one of my favorite bands, but saying “favorite bands” doesn’t even begin to describe it. I don’t think I would understand myself emotionally in relation to other people without 69 Love Songs. That’s right, an album single-handedly saved me from the autism spectrum.

I have spent so many hours of my life listening to their albums, and the voices especially of Stephin Merritt, Claudia Gonson, and Shirley Simms are permanently ingrained into the folds of my brain. Just seeing Shirley open her mouth and having that voice come out of it was a sort of magical-visceral experience that made me feel giddy and disoriented. This was the other email in my inbox the other day:

from my friend CL. I’d never heard it before, but I feel kind of dirty now, like I need to go rinse the Venga Boys out of my mouth with some real New Order.

Tips on Seducing an Exploded Bed Frame

3 March 2010

I woke up this morning some of the most wonderful things in my inbox. A photoshopped picture of my head into Destiny’s Child, and two great youtube videos. I’m going to share one with you today that I’m sure you would see sooner or later, but that I think you need to see sooner. I love Russia. I love 1976. I love shitty lip synching. Please, internet*, find something that combines them all.

Done and done. There’s not really much I can add to this via commentary, so just enjoy it.

*By internet, I of course mean “Hilly.”

Oooh Baby, I Like It Raw

a shitty combination of the Wu Tang logo with a Mardi Gras flag

A few years ago dj BC made a great album of Wu Tang tracks mixed with New Orleans brass, and called it Wu Orleans. In honor of Mardi Gras, I’m going to share it with you today. Two of my favorite tracks, plus the full album as a zip file:

“Boxing Fats Domino”

“Bogalusa Shimmy”
