When this blows up, I’ll probably go solo like Beyonce did

When people ask me what my favorite TV shows are, I often joke that they’re whatever NBC puts on Hulu. 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Rec– this honestly isn’t that far from the truth.

I was catching up on episodes of The Office this weekend and discovered a little three episode arc about Kelly and Erin’s “girl group” and their quest to make a music video. They’re definitely worth watching, if you’re a fan:

There’s so much to love here: we’re finally getting a glimpse into Erin’s personality, which appears to be minimal in a hilarious way, rather than a “Tara-from-Buffy” way. I love the way that she just mirrors what Kelly says and does. If I could sum up their effort, I would say it lies somewhere between impressively shitty and shittily impressive. This includes their shoot costumes.

He says, “Murder,” he says

Betty Hutton

Betty Hutton

Have I ever told you about how much I love Dinah Shore? She’s pretty much my favorite vocalist in the entire world, but that’s a subject for a different post. I was listening to a “Best of” compilation of hers the other day and noticed a track that I hadn’t paid much attention to before, called, “‘Murder,’ He Says.”

Dinah Shore – “‘Murder,’ He Says”

It’s from early-on in WWII, and written by Frank Loesser, best known for How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying and Guys and Dolls on Broadway, and a number of Tin Pan Alley hits. Shore’s version was pleasant enough to catch my ear, especially with the opening line:

Finally found a fella
Almost completely divine
But his vocabulary
Is killing this romance of mine

His… vocabulary? Is that anything like a girl’s “Personality”?

Dinah Shore — “Personality” (20s sample)

I did a youtube search out of curiosity, and unearthed what is perhaps one of the greatest clips ever committed to film: a version of “‘Murder,’ He Says” recorded by a 22-year-old Betty Hutton, for benefit of the troops: Continue reading →

Strip… Polka?

I recently picked up a stack of vinyl from a local antique store, including that perennial bargain-bin favorite, a polka record. It included a polka song with which I was previously unfamiliar, titled “Strip Polka,” which I have ripped just so I could put it here for you:

Stanley Pulaski and His Orchestra – “Strip Polka”

It’s a polka about burlesque! Just what the world needs. This was evidently a kind of popular song? I don’t know. But I know that this video is amazing:
